Summary of Research Results: Lynn Theprungsirikul

Unite For Sight Global Impact Fellow volunteers frequently pursue public health research studies in Unite For Sight's Global Impact Lab program. The research topics are developed by Unite For Sight and the partner eye clinics, the research studies are approved by an Institutional Review Board (IRB), and the research findings are submitted to the eye clinic partners for program development.

Lynn Theprungsirikul, “Barriers to the uptake of cataract surgery of eye patients in Tamale, Ghana”

Major findings from this study on cataract patient perception revealed a lack of knowledge in the opportunity and process of sight restoration, unfamiliarity with other cataract patients or those who had cataract surgery, and a need for permission from family or friends to undergo surgery. Two-thirds of participants had never attempted to restore vision prior to attending the eye clinic's outreach, but over 90% stated that they were willing to undergo surgery at the time of this study.
