Summary of Research Results: Weyni Berhe

Unite For Sight Global Impact Fellow volunteers frequently pursue public health research studies in Unite For Sight's Global Impact Lab program. The research topics are developed by Unite For Sight and the partner eye clinics, the research studies are approved by an Institutional Review Board (IRB), and the research findings are submitted to the eye clinic partners for program development.

Weyni Berhe, "Identifying the Barriers to Care that Prevent Parents and Caretakers from Bringing Their Children for Eye Care to Outreach Clinics in Chennai and the Kalinga Eye Hospital in Orissa, India"

This study aims to identify barriers to eye care for children living in Orissa, India. Data was collected from 15 patients participating in Kalinga Eye Hospital’s outreaches during the summer of 2012. While few families had taken their children for an eye exam previously, most brought at least one child to the Kalinga outreach on the day of the interview. In nearly all cases, this was due to a perceived eye problem that the parents wanted to be examined and treated. A basic quiz about eye problems revealed that there is generally low understanding of eye care among families, indicating a need for further education and awareness programming.
