Unite For Sight Volunteer Michael Nedelman Discusses His Unite For Sight Experience in Chennai, India, And His Unique Project "Project Phokas"

Michael Nedelman, an undergraduate at Yale, volunteered for six weeks in Chennai, India, during Summer 2006. While a volunteer, he implemented a unique project entitled Project Phokas, in which he distributed donated cameras from Kodak to give to cataract patients whose sight was restored by Unite For Sight. While most of the patients had never before used a camera, and most did not have vision for years, they produced beautiful, striking, and artistic photos.

Michael's presentation was filmed at the Unite For Sight Fourth Annual International Health Conference at Stanford University on April 14-15, 2007.

For his extraordinary efforts as a volunteer, Michael Nedelman was awarded a 2006 Unite For Sight Volunteer of the Year Award.

The Unite For Sight Program has come to reduce the burden, not only for the patient but also for the ophthalmologist who sometimes had to stay for two months without performing any eye surgery just because the patients could not pay to get their cataract removed.
