Unite For Sight Restores Sight to 80 in Tamale, Ghana

TAMALE, Ghana -- Unite For Sight and The Eye Clinic of Tamale Teaching Hospital joined forces to make cataract surgery a reality for 80 people.  Lacking the means to pay the $35 surgical cost, Unite For Sight provided the necessary funds for each patient.

Dr. Seth Wanye, who is the only ophthalmologist in the Tamale region, and Dr. Michael Hyams, an Israeli ophthalmologist and Unite For Sight volunteer, performed the 80 cataract operations during September and October 2005.

Dr. Wanye spoke highly of Unite For Sight, "The people of Tamale and the surrounding villages fully embrace your program and are very grateful to you and all those involved in [the] Unite For Sight program."

Unite For Sight volunteers will continue working with Dr. Wanye to reduce preventable blindness in the region through screening outreach initiatives and surgical care.  Unite For Sight will also continue to provide funding for the free cataract surgeries.
