Presbyopia

What?

Presbyopia, or farsightedness, is an eye condition that affects one’s close-up vision.

How?

The light entering the cornea and crystalline lens is bent so that the image would focus behind the retina, causing a distorted image to be transmitted to the retina and subsequently the brain. A convex lens can be used to correct the image.

The top image shows how the light enters the eye but is focused behind the retina. The bottom image shows how a convex lens can correct presbyopia, causing the light to reach the retina.

What are its symptoms?

1.4 million children are blind worldwide, and one in four school-aged children has a vision problem.
