David's Sight-Restoring Surgery

This summer, Ghanaian ophthalmic professionals and Unite For Sight Global Impact Fellows in Ghana encountered a special patient. With cataracts in both eyes, six-year old David had been blind since birth. During an outreach to a rural village, the local ophthalmic nurses diagnosed David with cataracts. He and his father were transported from their village to Crystal Eye Clinic in Accra where he received cataract surgery from Dr. James Clarke, a Ghanaian ophthalmologist. After his surgery, David's father returned with him to have his dressing removed. David began to cry, overwhelmed by the fact that he could see for the first time. As he cried, he said he could see, wanted to go to school, and wanted a book to read immediately! It was only after volunteers gave him a newspaper that he stopped crying. Unite For Sight’s Global Impact Fellows said that they felt fortunate to have been with him through the entire process of exam and diagnosis by the local ophthalmic nurses in the village, and surgery at the eye clinic. “We will never forget David” said Priya Srinivasan and Usha Rao , “and we are convinced that he'll have a bright future.” It was moments like this, they said, that made their experience with Unite For Sight truly memorable.
